Artist Statement

Art is informed by its creator, what we experience and love will shape the work, even subconsciously. In this vein, I make work that reflects my perspective as a queer, disabled woman. In a recent series, Hysteria, I explore these themes utilizing the visual vernacular of my favorite cinematic genre: horror. I make vibrant prints that stitch together horror iconography and feminine-presenting figures in narratives of violence caused by the gender binary. The juxtaposition causes discomfort in the audience, and brings into question why these archetypes have permeated media in the modern era. Within my work, I also weave in iconography of my maternal line and their history of craft, an overlooked aspect of art. Printmaking, particularly screen printing and relief, are my main processes. The action of relief reminds me of the repetitive motion of sewing, and connects my work to the craft of my mother and grandmother.
